INDEPENDENT EDITORIAL CARTOONIST
VANCOUVER, Wash. – Clark College student Nathan Childs was named a recipient of a Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ) Mark of Excellence Award. Childs placed in the top three for the Editorial Cartooning category in SPJ’s Region 10 for his weekly editorial cartoon, “Ozzie and Oswald.” Childs is invited to attend the Mark of Excellence Luncheon at the upcoming Spring Conference, March 28-29 in Portland, Oregon where the awards are presented. At the luncheon, the SPJ will announce where each Mark of Excellence recipient placed. If Childs placed first in the region, his editorial cartoons will move on to the national competition. Childs is a second year journalism student at Clark College. He is the opinion editor at the Independent where he also covers sports. Childs has received the Edda McCordic Talent Award in Journalism three consecutive quarters and was nominated for a Penguin Award in 2007. “Ozzie and Oswald” first appeared in the Independent on May 30, 2007 after President Robert Knight dubbed Clark College “The Penguin Nation” when he was appointed president during spring 2007. Annually, the Society of Professional Journalists presents the Mark of Excellence Awards honoring the best in student journalism. The awards offer 39 categories for print, radio, television, and online collegiate journalism. Entries are first judged on the regional level. First place regional winners are forwarded on to the national competition. National winners will be honored at the 2008 SPJ Convention & National Journalism Conference in Atlanta. -30- |
